The short version, for songwriters who don't want to read a wall of legalese.
Last updated: October 20, 2026
You own what you write. Always.
Every lyric, melody note, chord, voice memo, and demo recording you create in WritingRoom belongs to you and your co-writers, exactly as it would on a napkin or a Google Doc. WritingRoom never claims any ownership stake in your work, never auto-licenses it, and never publishes it without your explicit action.
Splits are determined by you and your co-writers using the in-app split sheet. WritingRoom records what you decide; we don't decide for you.
We don't train AI on your songs.
The AI features inside WritingRoom (the Riff help assistant, the Lyric Analyzer, Smart Catalog Import, Write with Riff, and a safety check on public posts) send text to a third-party language model. They run when you press the button, or when you post something other writers can see. Your lyrics, voice memos, and demos are never used to train any AI model, ours or anyone else's.
Rhyme suggestions are not AI. When you use the rhymes popover, the word you tap goes to Datamuse, a rhyming dictionary. We never sell, license, or share your creative content with AI companies for training. The page called How AI is Used lists every feature and what it sends.
Who can see what you write.
By default, only you and the writers you invite to a room can see the lyrics, scratchpad, voice memos, and demos in that room. Camp organizers (and admins they invite) can see rooms in their own camp. They cannot see rooms in any other camp.
If your camp organizer is using Observer mode, here's what's visible to whom:
- View only (default): Observers can read your room but cannot edit, comment, or alert you.
- Comment: Observers can leave comments on lyrics, but cannot edit.
- Modify with logging: Observers can edit the song, but every change is logged with a reason and you'll see a banner the next time you visit. You always know who changed what and why.
You can ask your camp organizer which mode is active before you join.
What we store, and where.
On Base44 (our app platform): your name, email, profile photo, songs, lyrics, splits, signatures, camp memberships, and the recordings you attach while bringing a song in (Bring your songs in and Attach a demo), which are held in the app's own file store.
On Cloudflare (our domain, email routing, and file storage): your voice memos, demo recordings (including Demo Studio takes and stems), and uploaded files are stored there as files, outside the database. Cloudflare also routes the writingroom.io domain and forwards email.
On Stripe (payments): when you pick a paid plan, you pay on Stripe's own page. We never see or keep your card number.
On Brevo (email): the emails we send you, like invites, receipts, and notices, go out through Brevo.
Voice memos and demo recordings live until you or your camp organizer deletes them. A take you delete in Demo Studio can be brought back with Undo for about 12 seconds. After that it is gone for good.
We do not sell or share your data with advertisers. Ever. WritingRoom has no ads.
Who can open a listen link or a playlist?
Anyone with the link can open it while it is on. A Free link closes by itself after 14 days. A listener can download a song only when the writer allows it. Switch a link off and it stops working right away.
What can a writer see about who listened?
The writer sees a first name if the listener typed one, the kind of device, how long they listened, and a country code. We do not collect an exact location.
Who owns a recording made in Demo Studio?
The writers on that song own it, the same as the words. WritingRoom takes no share and claims no rights.
What audio can I bring in?
Only audio that is yours to use. That means your own recordings, or recordings you have permission to use. If you are not sure, leave it out.
How long does my hosted audio stay?
Audio we host for you stays while your plan allows it. When you delete your account, your voice memos and demos are deleted, as described below.
Who can see Billboard and Wanted posts?
Writers who are signed in can see them while they are up. Posts like these are also run through the safety check described in How AI is Used.
What we'll ask before doing.
- We'll never email-blast all your camp's writers without your camp organizer's action.
- We'll never expose your unfinished work to other writers outside your room.
- We'll never share your contact info with another camp's organizer.
- We'll always log admin modifications and show you what changed.
Your rights.
You can:
- Export everything you've written from WritingRoom at any time (PDF, a plain text file you can open, audio files).
- Delete your account at any time. Open Settings, then Account, and use Delete my account. Our team processes the request by hand, usually within 48 hours, and emails you when it's done. Deletion is permanent. Your account stays active until then, so if you change your mind, email [email protected] first.
- Delete a single song at any time. It sits in Trash for 30 days, then it's gone for good.
- Request a copy of all the data we hold about you, as a plain text file you can open, by emailing [email protected]. We respond within 14 days.
If you're in a room with co-writers and you delete your account, the song stays alive for them, but your name on the splits becomes "Former co-writer", and your voice memos are deleted.
When we'll change this.
We'll update this page if we add features that change how data flows. The version date at the top updates with every change. For material changes (new third party, new data category, new sharing rule), we'll email everyone with an active account at least 14 days before the change takes effect.
Questions? Email [email protected] and we'll answer in plain English.
