The short version, for songwriters who don't want to read a wall of legalese.

You own what you write. Always.

Every lyric, melody note, chord, voice memo, and demo recording you create in WritingRoom belongs to you and your co-writers — exactly as it would on a napkin or a Google Doc. WritingRoom never claims any ownership stake in your work, never auto-licenses it, and never publishes it without your explicit action.

Splits are determined by you and your co-writers using the in-app split sheet. WritingRoom records what you decide; we don't decide for you.

We don't train AI on your songs.

The AI features inside WritingRoom (rhyme suggestions, future transcription, future co-writing tools) run against general-purpose language models from third parties. Your lyrics, voice memos, and demos are never used to train any AI model — ours or anyone else's.

When you use the rhymes popover, the request to find rhymes runs locally or against a model that doesn't retain your input. We never sell, license, or share your creative content with AI companies for training.

Who can see what you write.

By default, only you and the writers you invite to a session can see the lyrics, scratchpad, voice memos, and demos in that session. Camp organizers (and admins they invite) can see sessions in their own camp. They cannot see sessions in any other camp.

If your camp organizer is using Observer mode, here's what's visible to whom:

• View only (default): Observers can read your session but cannot edit, comment, or alert you.
• Comment: Observers can leave comments on lyrics, but cannot edit.
• Modify with logging: Observers can edit the song, but every change is logged with a reason and you'll see a banner the next time you visit. You always know who changed what and why.

You can ask your camp organizer which mode is active before you join.

What we store, and where.

On Base44 (our app platform): your name, email, profile photo, songs, lyrics, splits, signatures, voice memos, demo recordings, camp memberships.

On Cloudflare (our domain + email host): nothing about your songs. Cloudflare just routes the writingroom.io domain and forwards email.

Voice memos and demo recordings are uploaded as audio files to our storage layer (not embedded in the database itself, after our 2026-05-02 migration). They live until you or your camp organizer deletes them.

We do not sell or share your data with advertisers. Ever. WritingRoom has no ads.

What we'll ask before doing.

• We'll never email-blast all your camp's writers without your camp organizer's action.
• We'll never expose your unfinished work to other writers outside your session.
• We'll never share your contact info with another camp's organizer.
• We'll always log admin modifications and show you what changed.

Your rights.

You can:

• Export everything you've written from WritingRoom at any time (PDF, JSON, audio files).
• Delete your account and all your songs at any time. Soft-delete is reversible for 30 days; hard-delete is final.
• Request a copy of all the data we hold about you, in JSON, by emailing terry@writingroom.io. We respond within 14 days.

If you're in a session with co-writers and you delete your account, the song stays alive for them — but your name is removed from the splits and scratchpad, and your voice memos are deleted.

When we'll change this.

We'll update this page if we add features that change how data flows. The version date at the top updates with every change. For material changes (new third party, new data category, new sharing rule), we'll email everyone with an active account at least 14 days before the change takes effect.
